Gartner released the Hype Cycle for Secure AI, 2026 on 12 October 2026. I spent some time going through it, and a few things really stood out. The AI security market is exploding with new vendors, categories, and solutions. But the research reinforces something I’ve believed for a long time: Securing AI requires more than protecting the model. You need to understand and protect what AI can actually do.

Every API security evaluation reaches the same objection: “We already run SAST and DAST.” The objection is fair. Static Application Security Testing (SAST) reads source code before release. Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST) probes a running application from the outside. Both belong in continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. Both also struggle with the two Application Programming Interface (API) flaws that matter most.
