They have seen the headlines, looked at the latest renewal, and decided it is time to evaluate Nutanix, Proxmox, public cloud, or another virtualization platform. The opportunity appears straightforward: help them select an alternative and build the migration plan. But what if leaving VMware isn’t actually the best answer? A platform move is risky, time-consuming, and expensive.

Broadcom’s acquisition has every IT leader re-examining their virtualization stack. Per CloudBolt’s February 2026 survey of 302 IT decisionmakers, 86% are actively reducing their VMware footprint, but only 4% have fully completed the move, and over 50% have changed strategy twice or more since the acquisition. That gap between intent and actualization tells a very specific story. Migrating away from VMware isn’t easy and may not lead to the outcomes those leaders were expecting.

Here is a deal that almost died for the wrong reason. The customer said, “We need Hyper-V.” The partner logged it as a technical requirement, qualified the opportunity out of any VMware conversation, and moved on. Reasonable enough. That is what a stated requirement is supposed to mean. Except it was not technical. When someone finally asked why Hyper-V, the answer had nothing to do with the hypervisor.
