Why Did a Cyber Reporter Face Backlash Over PHP and What Does It Reveal About Our Industry?

Why did the BBC's cyber correspondent face a wave of backlash for admitting he hadn't heard of PHP, and what does it say about our community?

In this episode, recorded in our new Razorwire studio, I sit down with BBC Cyber Correspondent Joe Tidy, Lisa Ventura (AI and Cyber Security Association, Cyber Kindness) and Gary Hibberd (Consultants Like Us, The Real Cyber Awards) to unpack the pile-on that followed Joe's on-air admission during the PHP emergency.

Joe tells us what happened and how it felt to be on the receiving end. Gary makes the case that nobody can be an expert in every part of security, and that explaining a technical story to millions is a skill in its own right. Lisa introduces the Cyber Kindness Pledge and asks what this behaviour teaches the newcomers we keep saying we want. Together, we draw the line between healthy debate and toxicity, and I explain why I'll always back the people in the arena over the critics in the cheap seats.

What we cover:

  • Joe Tidy's side of the PHP story
  • Why nobody can be an expert in everything
  • Making cyber accessible for mainstream audiences
  • The chilling effect of pile-ons on newcomers
  • What drives keyboard warriors
  • The Cyber Kindness Pledge
  • Healthy debate vs. toxicity
  • Theodore Roosevelt's "Man in the Arena"
