GLM 5.2 vs Opus 4.8: Cheaper AI Code, Hidden Risks?

GLM 5.2 just launched from Z.ai, and it might be one of the biggest threats yet to the frontier model premium. It’s open, significantly cheaper than Claude Opus 4.8, and claims to deliver near-frontier coding performance across major benchmarks. But benchmarks only matter if the model can actually build something production-ready.

In this video, we put GLM 5.2 through the same real-world coding test as Claude Opus 4.8: building a secure Node.js CRUD notes app from a single prompt. We compare the final app, the time it took, the cost tradeoff, and the security results from scanning the generated code and dependencies with Snyk.

GLM 5.2 successfully built the app, passed the core functionality test, and produced zero open-source dependency vulnerabilities. But Snyk also found 16 code security issues, including CSRF concerns, information exposure, logging risks, and resource-limit warnings. So the real question is: is GLM 5.2 good enough to replace expensive frontier models for everyday AI coding workflows?
